Gynostemma pentaphyllum, also called jiaogulan, literally "stranded blue plant", is a dioecious, herbaceous climbing vine of the family Cucurbitaceae (cucumber or gourd family) indigenous to the southern reaches of China, northern Vietnam, southern Korea, and Japan.13 species of Gynostemma pentaphyllum are known in the world. There are 11 species in China, which are widely distributed in the vast provinces and regions south of the Tianqinling Mountains. It mainly grows in the cloudy and humid areas of valleys, dense forests, hills, hillsides and rocky mountains at an altitude of 300-3200 meters.Jiaogulan is best known as an herbal medicine reputed to have powerful antioxidant and adaptogenic effects.
